I have a conflict with the Telugu translation.
    Please clarify.

I feel that Tagore (or is it the English translator) is saying that the sorrow is “hushed”, meaning silenced, not “ushered” as in “aagamanam”.

I found, I think, the entire English translation here:
    http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/tagore/strybrds.htm

    Please comment.

    Regards,
    lalitha.

    Swathi garu,

first off, thanks for introducing me to a beautiful work of Rabindranatha Tagore. I hardly read any, except one or two in text books and that too when I couldn’t comprehend much.

In looking for the context of the line you translated,
I found the entire text, which is quite big. I wonder if I read even half of it. But I read that same part a few times over again. Now I am beginning to understand why Rabindranath is spoken highly of.

Well, to translate that particular line, I don’t think that I can. Meanwhile, what I want to say is this:
try and read all these lines together and see what you can make of it

“Her wistful face haunts my dreams like the rain at night.

Once we dreamt that we were strangers. We wake up to find that we were dear to each other.

Sorrow is hushed into peace in my heart like the evening among the silent trees.

Some unseen fingers, like idle breeze, are playing upon my heart the music of the ripples”

To me, it seems like the poet has found peace rather than sorrow as indicated in the telugu version. The sorrow, which was there earlier, was silenced, in the love he found. The love he found was like the loving embrace the evening found in the trees. This is how it struck to me.
But I’m still interepreting with very limited knowledge. So, I hope there are people better equipped to explain this and that we may understand the intended sense of the original sometime, somehow.

    Regards,
    lalitha.

    Swathi garu,

I hope you got a chance to read the entire English version. I have been reading it on and off but never all in one piece.
    Anyway, the point is this.
I got the feeling that the poet is at the sunset point of his life. He seems to be summarising his life and inviting the end with open arms.He seems at peace with the idea of the end and even eager for it just because he thinks it’s the next / last? stop in his journey and not because of any complaints with life. In fact he says he’s “glad I’m in this great world”.
This work needs to be read over and over again and it is a pleasure to do so.
I hope someone more knowledgeable comments on this.

    lalitha.

this is my translation to the much discussed stanza of strabirds.

i felt happy on reading a discussion on this and am satisfied that my translation reflected the thoughts of lalitha gaaru.

i have tried to translate stray birds into telugu and posted the same in my blog as given hereunder.

hope you would have a look.

    thank you
